Kick-Ass 2 – Review

Whoa! Now this is what I would literally call kick-ass! That Hit-Girl chick is something else, a piece of work I must say. Funny, smart, fast, and confused like a teenager, but when it comes to beating bad guys, she is simply the best.

But you know what I liked the most about the movie? There is a dog, that belongs to bad-ass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey’s character) and boy what a good time he has in the movie; I mean I (as a canine) would give anything, just anything, for being able to rip-out and chew on people’s balls, and get cinema exposure at the same time!

Kick-Ass 2 as a movie pays homage to comic book graphic violence that for all reasons right seems determined to teach every school kid the importance of stop taking shit and start kicking some ass.

The year 2010 saw the successful predecessor, Kick-Ass, that introduced the audiences to the world of Hit-Girl, Kick-Ass and Red Mist.

Now, in 2013, they return, much bigger and much better.

The good thing about this one is that it doesn’t stray into that dark world or the dark side of things, now so gladly pursued and portrayed by other superhero movies like The Dark Knight, or the latest Superman [Man of Steel].

In-fact, it is a pleasure and a relief to watch a movie that is not a typical Christopher Nolan style of film-making.

The movie starts with the foul-mouthed Mindy Macready/Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) starting to deal with her life in the absence of her dad and mentor [Nicholas Cage]. But she doesn’t want to be like a normal, ordinary teenage girl. So each day from school she sneaks out, goes to her own ‘lab’ and practices the art of, well, simply put, ass-kicking.

Gradually she takes Dave Lizewski/Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) under her wing too, teaching him, training him, and to the delight of the audiences, shooting him in the chest as practice!

Things get a bit complicated, and Mindy is forced by her guardian to leave all this tom-foolery behind, and concentrate on her school life.

Disheartened, Dave joins a group of masked vigilantes led by Colonel Stars and Stripes.
On the other hand, the cartoonish Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), accidently kills his own mother-who by the way he had great respect for, considering he referred to her as a Bitch-and assumes control of all the family wealth.

Now re-born as The Mother F%&*^r, and incapable of being able to kick ass himself, he builds up an army of villains, to take control of the city and defeat Kick-Ass.

What follows is simply hilarious. Worth watching are the antics and the foul-language of Hit Girl and the dressing sense of The Mother F%&*^r.

Written and directed by Jeff Wadlow, and based on the violent comic books by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr, Kiss-Ass 2 is a fun-filled ride that will want you to go back to your High school days and re-live them like the Mindy and Dave do. And at this stage, it is safe to say that a sequel won’t hurt.

Kiss-Ass 2 releases in Australian Cinemas on August 22.
