GI Joe: Retaliation – Movie Review

If as a child of four or thereabouts you loved playing with GIJoe toys, emitting crazy sounds of glee while mentally enacting scenes of defeat of Cobra after the yells, the “dishm-dishm”, the “whoom-whoom”, the smash-squash, then this movie is for you.

As a kid I did enact such sounds playing with my set of GI-Joes and watching the flick I adored the transportation back to those blissful years.

Zartan [Arnold Voslo] as President wants to have nuclear warheads and for this despatches the GI-Joe team under Commander Duke [Channing Tatum] and then cunningly frames the team for anti-nation crimes and attempts to wipe them out.

All die save Flint [DG Cotrona], Lady Jaya [Adrian Polick] and Road Block [Dwayne Johnson].

As the surviving GI-Joes try deciphering the reason for the calamity that has overtaken them, Cobra Commander Luke Bracey begins to transform the world in synch with his evil mind, gunning the innocent, destroying the city of London.

GI-Joes get grouped under the grunting Joseph Cotton [Bruce Willis] and form a retaliation plan to overthrow the Cobra team of the likes of Storm Shadow [Byung-hun Lee], ex-GIJoe Firefly [Ray Stevenson], expose them and rescue the real President.

The movie wows the viewer with some grand spectacle – half a mile above the sea level is simply a big wow scene.

It is also mesmerizing to watch Ninja battle by trapeze artist and soldiers that fly across mountains.

Had there been more such visuals the otherwise blandness of the movie would have evaporated. Though some other elements need magical evaporation from a movie meant for kids; un-parliamentary words like ‘ass’; ‘hell’ a cut in the middle ‘mother…’ as also the many deafening explosions, the kung-fu fights, the chases, destruction like that of London, or even the occasional display of female body.

Or are the kids today more grown up and used to all this?
