Olympus Has Fallen – Review

It has truly been a while since Hollywood has churned out a simple, good old action movie that grips you from the start, and refuses to let go until the end. Olympus has fallen is one such action thriller, that not only reminds you of classics like Die hard, but also makes one wonder why such clean cut action movies are not being produced these days.

Olympus has fallen tells the story of Mike Banning (Gerard Butler), a Secret Service Agent and a former Special Forces US Army Ranger, who guards the President of the United States of America, Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart).

But besides doing his job to the level of perfection, Mike is also the President’s buddy, one who trains the President how to box, harmlessly flirts with the First Lady (Ashley Judd) , plays with the President’s only kid, and doesn’t stray from swearing at the Speaker of the House!

As the story progresses, unfortunately for Mike, the President’s car gets subjected to an accident, and Mike is unable to save the First Lady.

Mike is dejected and even though the President knows that it wasn’t Mike’s fault, he nonetheless doesn’t want to see him working for him again; so Mike gets a new job.

Their lives move on, both busy in their own worlds: President Benjamin having won the re-election, and Mike now working across from the White House at the Treasury.

But Olympus has fallen is an action movie, and things are bound to cease being sentimental and go messy at some stage.

In comes the South Korean delegation for talks with the President, but things go wary and pretty much, fuc$%^ up!

Lots of explosions, murder, blood, and sneaky fights later, it is up-to Gerard to save the day, as apparently the US government, Army, and the Secret Service are incapable without him!

Not that we are complaining; a one man army is always appealing on the big screen.

The movie story is pretty straightforward, and the stunts awesome.

Antoine Fuqua’s (Training Day fame) direction is as always exceptional, Gerard Butler shines in his role, and so does Morgan Freeman (as Speaker Allan Trumbull and Acting President) in a guest appearance.

If your week is going slow, boring, or lackluster, watch Olympus has fallen. It will surely perk you up.

Olympus has fallen has now released on DVD and Blu-Ray in Australia.
